One of the age-old questions asked is whether a cheap bed can measure up to the qualities of an expensive bed. The simple answer here is cheap beds do not measure up to expensive ones. There are big differences in the quality of the bed bought for cheap and the ones bought with a heftier price tag, and those differences should matter to you. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of both cheap and expensive beds. For this example, we are using memory foam.
Advantages of Cheap Memory Foam
It’s cheap. Who doesn’t love cheap?
You will find that they are often softer than their expensive counterparts. This might not always happen, but it does in most cases. The reason for this is because the mattresses themselves have been made from less dense memory foam. This also means it compresses easily. The downside to this is that you might find your cheap mattress is less durable.
Many of the cheaper models are starting to incorporate the use of gel, making for a cooler sleep.
Disadvantages of Cheap Memory Foam
You’ll end up replacing your mattress sooner than you expected.
Some people have reported topical reactions to memory foam/gel mix mattresses.
You might be getting much less than you bargained for overall, a softer sleep could mean a more restless sleep, which would be defeating the purpose of buying a new mattress.
Advantages of Premium Memory Foam
It lasts longer. And by this, we mean a lot longer. Some expensive memory foam mattresses are known to last upwards of 15 years before showing the slightest bit of wear and tear. If you’re buying a cheap mattress you may only have five years of use out of it.
Foams are denser in more expensive models. This means that they are firmer. This also means they are more durable, they give excellent support and they offer a slower natural sink.
They are non-toxic. This is not only great for the environment but also for the sleeper.
Disadvantages of Premium Memory Foam
Memory Foam mattresses also tend to sleep much warmer. This means that if you get hot while you sleep you should rather consider buying a Latex mattress for its breathability. It should be noted, however, that new techniques for the manufacture of mattresses allow for increased airflow. In addition to this, you may also find that your Memory Foam mattress expels a strong chemical odor once unpackaged. This is because your newly bought mattress will have to expand to the right size after you remove the packaging.
Regardless of which mattress you choose, you should know that a cheap mattress probably will not give the same performance as an expensive one. If you are working on a budget, you need to stick to it, buying a new affordable mattress is an exciting venture and you should know that even the cheapest memory foam mattresses will offer better support than innerspring mattresses of the same price.
