Epoxy Mortar – Working and Benefits

Epoxy mortars are polymer-based adhesive paste that is made of materials like epoxy resins, binders, solvents, additives, and mineral fillers. It is combined with sand or coarse aggregate to protect steel against corrosion.

During the curing process, there is an exothermic reaction, which results in expansion but because of the coarse or fine aggregate added to the epoxy sealant, there is a decrease in the temperature rise as well as expansion. Ultimately the mass cools and returns to its original size. Nevertheless, the epoxy resin will not experience shrinkage in the curing process.

Epoxy mortar is employed as a paste and adhesive for structural repair. Professionals even use it to fill cracks, vents, and gaps in patios, plazas, driveways, and doorways.

Benefits of epoxy-based mortar

  • Mixing is easy
  • High hardness & strength
  • Great adhesive compatible with a variety of materials
  • Non-sag & non slip
  • Stain-resistant
  • Moisture resistant
  • Cures rapidly
  • Good impact, chemical, and abrasion resistance
  • Strengthens the lifespan of the structure

The desired properties are attained by the mortar’s formula type. Different brands offer different formulas. The common formula is 2-part epoxy mortars [resin & hardener]. It is pricey in comparison to cement mortar but offers desired performance. Both epoxy and cement mortars have specific applications because of their unique characteristics.

Epoxy mortars cost 8X more than cement mortars and have a typical odor. However, its great characteristics make it suitable to employ in certain jobs. It is available in a plethora of colors, it is stain-resistant and fast curing.

So, it is the popular choice among tile installers. Cement mortar takes several days to set properly and needs to be grouted, while epoxy mortars don’t need sealing because of their water-resistant characteristics.

Epoxy resin mortars are even used for concrete repairs like cracks in columns, slabs, beams, and walls.
